The goal of learning at APU is to equip students with broad knowledge and perspectives, laying a solid foundation as global citizens. APS offers four fields of study: Environment & Development, Tourism Studies, International Relations, and Culture, Society & Media. By learning across these disciplines and acquiring knowledge in various fields, we aim for students to develop the flexibility of thought and the ability to apply their knowledge to face any challenge. To this end, APS places a strong emphasis on field studies. This program involves conducting research activities both domestically and internationally, with pre-study sessions guided by faculty members who specialize in the selected theme, followed by practical training on-site with the same faculty. The program covers diverse themes such as the activities of municipalities involved in innovative regional development, differences in development approaches in countries and regions with varying development levels, and the current state and challenges of peacebuilding.

Social challenges such as economic inequality and rural decline grow worse, while resource depletion, environmental contamination, and climate change threaten the globe. The College of Sustainability and Tourism focuses on building circular communities as well as on utilizing tourism to conserve resources and create value. We address humankind’s inevitable challenges of the 21st century through a two-way approach – sustainability science, which examines the development of sustainable societies, and tourism, which influences local economies and cultures.
