    Written Test

    JPUE held written test and skill test at each area at the same time. The applicants need to arrive at the arranged test room in time and take the test all together. Applicants can choose the language of the test from native language, English and Japanese. It is not necessary to understand Japanese for the test.
    From this year, we added the drawing skill tests for art school applicants.

    (1) Summary of written tests

    The written test consists of two parts: basic subjects and additional subjects. The latter is divided into two parts: the "advanced subjects" examination which is required to apply for national universities and the skills examination which is required to apply for art departments. The written test lasts for two days. The first day is for basic subjects, and the next day is for additional subjects. Candidates who do not choose additional subjects only need to take the first day examination.
    The written test is held in the designated examination room, and all candidates will gather in the examination room to take the written test. The subjects to be taken by the candidates on the written test day are determined by the subjects they selected when they register. In principle, the written test subjects cannot be changed on the written test day.

    (2) Sign-in on the day of written test

    The written test starts at 9:00 a.m. on that day. Please sign in between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. According to the regional conditions, the examination schedule may be adjusted. If this happens, the examination bureau will contact the candidates directly to inform. Candidates who are more than 30 minutes late for each subject will be disqualified for that subject. In addition, in the event of natural disasters and other situations where the Bureau cannot contact the candidates, please follow the warning and response benchmarks issued by the local government.

    (3) Venue for the Written test and skill tests

    Candidates will be notified in advance of each examination venue.

    (4) Articles required for the day of "written test and skill test"

    Please bring the following items to the examination room on the day of the examination.

    (1) Admission card (Please print the electronic version of the admission card and bring it to the examination site.)
    (2) Identity card
    (3) Written test appliances
    (4) Calculator (Please check here for the types can be used during the test..)
    (5) Lunch (Depending on the test venue, there may be no stores nearby.)
    (6) Drawing tools (only for those who take the sketch test. (Knives, pencils, erasers)

    ※The drawing board (B3) for the sketch test will be distributed on that day.

    (5) Time arrangement of the day of written test

    A) 1st day of written test/basic subject exam

    1st test

    ① Foreign language examination "Japanese" or "English"
    90-minute Compulsory subjects 9:00-10:30

    2nd test

    ② Mathematics examination "Basic Mathematics" or "Science Mathematics"
    90-minute Compulsory subjects 10:50-12:20.

    3rd test

    ③ Science examination 1 "Physics", "Chemistry", "Biology"
    60-minutes Optional subjects 13:00-14:00

    B) 2nd day of written test/additional subject examination

    (Ⅰ) Candidates applying for national universities

    1st test

    ⑤-1 Advanced Mathematics examination
    90-minute 9:00-10:30

    2nd test

    ⑤-2 Advanced Science examination "Physics", "Chemistry", "Biology"
    60-minute 10:50-11:50
    ※➄-2/ When taking two science examinations, the examination time is 120 minutes.

    (Ⅱ) Candidates applying for art universities

    (6) Range of questions in written test

    The range of questions in written test and previous exam papers can be viewed or downloaded on this website. In addition, the additional subjects and skills examination are new examination items to be which implemented since the 1st term in 2021. The scoring criteria for the skill tests can be viewed from the range of questions in the above websites, but there are no previous exam papers. (Currently, September 20, 2019)

    (7) On the use of calculators in written test

    According to the provisions of the senior high school syllabus in the JPUE implementation area, calculators can be used in written tests in some areas. The type of calculator that can be used in written test follows the regulations of the entrance examination of universities in different regions, and is limited to the type allowed in the entrance examination of universities in different regions. For details, please refer to the following regional calculator usage specifications.
    In addition, if you use a calculator model beyond the permitted range or use a modified calculator in a written test, you will lose the qualification for the examination.

    Shanghai and Surrounding Areas
    For written tests other than English, only calculators officially approved for use in the "Gaokao" (National College Entrance Examination) are permitted.
    Please refer to the Gaokao calculator usage regulations for the Shanghai area.

    Hong Kong
    For written tests other than English, only calculators officially approved for use in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) are permitted.

    Taiwan
    For written tests other than English, only calculators with basic arithmetic functions provided by the administration office on the day of the exam are permitted.
    Bringing your own calculator is not allowed.

    Malaysia
    For written tests other than English, only calculators officially approved for use in the Malaysian Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) are permitted.

    (8) Exemption for re-taking "written test and skill test"

    If you want to re-take exam, you can use the previous written test results for the interview.
    However, the written test results that can be used are only applicable to the same year's examination.
    Upon approval, the applicant will be exempted from the written test after contacting the secretariat at the time of application.
    Even if you are exempt from the written test, the application fee will not change.
